A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6/7 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown part in the library msb1fren.dll of the file htmlmm.ocx of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 6, and 7 uses certain COM objects from (1) Msb1fren.dll, (2) Htmlmm.ocx, and (3) Blnmgrps.dll as ActiveX controls, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, a different issue than CVE-2006-4697.
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was presented 02/13/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0219. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2654 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24340 (MS07-016: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (928090)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100045 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS07-016)).
Upgrading to version 8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5109.
