A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality in the library wininet.dll of the component FTP Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). The wininet.dll FTP client code in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an FTP server response of a specific length that causes a terminating null byte to be written outside of a buffer, which causes heap corruption.
The bug was discovered 08/16/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0217. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100045 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS07-016)).
Upgrading to version 7 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5108.
