A vulnerability was found in WordPress (Content Management System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function wp_explain_nonce of the file wp-admin/templates.php. The manipulation of the argument action with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the wp_explain_nonce function in the nonce AYS functionality (wp-includes/functions.php) for WordPress 2.0 before 2.0.9 and 2.1 before 2.1.1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the file parameter to wp-admin/templates.php, and possibly other vectors involving the action variable.
The weakness was released 02/12/2007 (Website). The advisory is available at trac.wordpress.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-1049 since 02/21/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
