Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in F5 NGINX Open Source and NGINX Plus (the affected version unknown). Affected is the function ngx_http_dav_module of the component DAV Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
NGINX Open Source and NGINX Plus have a vulnerability in the ngx_http_dav_module module that might allow an attacker to trigger a buffer overflow to the NGINX worker process; this vulnerability may result in termination of the NGINX worker process or modification of source or destination file names outside the document root. This issue affects NGINX Open Source and NGINX Plus when the configuration file uses DAV module MOVE or COPY methods, prefix location (nonregular expression location configuration), and alias directives. The integrity impact is constrained because the NGINX worker process user has low privileges and does not have access to the entire system. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.
The advisory is available at my.f5.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-27654 since 03/18/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/20/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 305582 (RHEL 9 : nginx (RHSA-2026:7002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
