Linux Kernel up to 6.18.16/6.19.6/7.0-rc2 SMB Client smb2_unlink uninitialized resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This manipulation causes an unknown weakness. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-23282. There is no exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.16/6.19.6/7.0-rc2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function smb2_unlink of the component SMB Client. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix oops due to uninitialised var in smb2_unlink() If SMB2_open_init() or SMB2_close_init() fails (e.g. reconnect), the iovs set @rqst will be left uninitialised, hence calling SMB2_open_free(), SMB2_close_free() or smb2_set_related() on them will oops. Fix this by initialising @close_iov and @open_iov before setting them in @rqst.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-23282 since 01/13/2026. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/01/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 311340 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool6.18, kernel6.18, kernel6.18-devel (ALAS2023-2026-1596)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.18.17, 6.19.7 or 7.0-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 86163b98891aa9800f6103252e5acc7bb98afb91/dc710c87af3341554d02d634ada1d2036c49a94a/048efe129a297256d3c2088cf8d79515ff5ec864 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (311340) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0861). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
