A vulnerability has been found in Digium Asterisk up to 1.4.17 (Communications System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component BYE/Also Handler. The SIP channel driver in Asterisk Open Source 1.4.x before 1.4.17, Business Edition before C.1.0-beta8, AsteriskNOW before beta7, Appliance Developer Kit before Asterisk 1.4 revision 95946, and Appliance s800i 1.0.x before 1.0.3.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a BYE message with an Also (Also transfer) header, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference.

The weakness was disclosed 01/03/2008 with Gray VoIP (Website). The advisory is shared for download at downloads.digium.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0095 since 01/07/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by greyvoip and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29847 (Fedora 7 : asterisk-1.4.17-1.fc7 (2008-0198)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
