PHP up to 4.4.4/5.2.0 Session Extension information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in PHP up to 4.4.4/5.2.0 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component Session Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The php_binary serialization handler in the session extension in PHP before 4.4.5, and 5.x before 5.2.1, allows context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information (memory contents) via a serialized variable entry with a large length value, which triggers a buffer over-read.

The bug was discovered 03/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/09/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1380 since 03/09/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24673 (CentOS 3 / 4 : php (CESA-2007:0076)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156186 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PHP (ELSA-2007:0076)).

Upgrading to version 4.4.5 or 5.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33218), Exploit-DB (3413), Tenable (24673), SecurityFocus (BID 22805†) and OSVDB (32776†). The entries VDB-2912, VDB-35862, VDB-35853 and VDB-35009 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
