The php_binary serialization handler in the session extension in PHP before 4.4.5, and 5.x before 5.2.1, allows context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information (memory contents) via a serialized variable entry with a large length value, which triggers a buffer over-read.
The bug was discovered 03/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/09/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1380 since 03/09/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24673 (CentOS 3 / 4 : php (CESA-2007:0076)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156186 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PHP (ELSA-2007:0076)).
Upgrading to version 4.4.5 or 5.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
