Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in PHP 5.0.0 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function wddx_deserialize of the file wddx.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The wddx_deserialize function in wddx.c 1.119.2.10.2.12 and 1.119.2.10.2.13 in PHP 5, as modified in CVS on 20070224 and fixed on 20070304, calls strlcpy where strlcat was intended and uses improper arguments, which allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a WDDX packet with a malformed overlap of a STRING element, which triggers a buffer overflow.
The weakness was presented 03/04/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared at php-security.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1381 since 03/09/2007. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/25/2025).
A public exploit has been developed by Stefan Esser and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at php-security.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31649 (PHP 5.x < 5.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33215), Exploit-DB (3404), Tenable (31649), SecurityFocus (BID 22804†) and OSVDB (32775†).
