PHP up to 5.2.0 crypt memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in PHP up to 5.2.0. This affects the function crypt. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2007-2844. No exploit exists. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in PHP up to 5.2.0 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function crypt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

PHP 4.x and 5.x before 5.2.1, when running on multi-threaded systems, does not ensure thread safety for libc crypt function calls using protection schemes such as a mutex, which creates race conditions that allow remote attackers to overwrite internal program memory and gain system access.

The weakness was disclosed 05/19/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.php-security.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-2844 since 05/24/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/20/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31649 (PHP 5.x < 5.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading to version 4.x eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34601), Tenable (31649), SecurityFocus (BID 24109†), OSVDB (36088†) and Secunia (SA25434†). The entries VDB-29554, VDB-29013, VDB-35765 and VDB-35533 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
