A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component ImageIO. Unspecified vulnerability in ImageIO in Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4 through 10.4.8 allows remote user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted RAW image that triggers memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 03/13/2007. The weakness was presented 03/14/2007 by Luke Church (Alex) with Security-Protocols (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0733 since 02/05/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24811 (Mac OS X < 10.4.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115527 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Security Update 2007-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-03-13)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
