A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.2/5.3/6.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component pioout. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the pioout program in printers.rte in IBM AIX 5.2, 5.3, and 6.1 allows local users to gain privileges via a long command line option.
The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was disclosed 01/24/2008 by iDefense Labs with iDefense (Website). The advisory is available at www14.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5764 since 10/31/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1940 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31008 (AIX 5.3 TL 7 : printers.rte (U815841)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
