Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in IBM Lotus Domino up to 6.5.5 (Groupware Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component LDAP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the LDAP server in IBM Lotus Domino before 6.5.6 and 7.x before 7.0.2 FP1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a long, malformed DN request, which causes only the lower 16 bits of the string length to be used in memory allocation.
The bug was discovered 03/27/2007. The weakness was presented 03/28/2007 with iDEFENSE as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1739 since 03/28/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74236 (IBM Lotus Domino LDAP Server Task Unspecified Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 6.5.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9006.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33278), SecurityFocus (BID 23173†), OSVDB (34092†), Secunia (SA24633†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017825†).
