Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13/7.0.0 ps_to_hz divide by zero

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13/7.0.0. This issue affects the function ps_to_hz. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a divide by zero vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-369. The product divides a value by zero. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: staging: sm750fb: fix division by zero in ps_to_hz() ps_to_hz() is called from hw_sm750_crtc_set_mode() without validating that pixclock is non-zero. A zero pixclock passed via FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO causes a division by zero. Fix by rejecting zero pixclock in lynxfb_ops_check_var(), consistent with other framebuffer drivers.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-31603 since 03/09/2026. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 310282 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31603), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.83, 6.18.24, 6.19.14 or 7.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
