Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13/7.0.0. Affected is the function cdev_init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: f_hid: don't call cdev_init while cdev in use When calling unbind, then bind again, cdev_init reinitialized the cdev, even though there may still be references to it. That's the case when the /dev/hidg* device is still opened. This obviously unsafe behavior like oopes. This fixes this by using cdev_alloc to put the cdev on the heap. That way, we can simply allocate a new one in hidg_bind.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-31606 since 03/09/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/26/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 310305 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31606), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.83, 6.18.24, 6.19.14 or 7.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c6c0d13db5d0f8d465eabc14bd23d2b6a7247a43/eb6ef6185f2054a341ec70d7e2165f5381744215/5a229016ca3ac551294ec59770be9da94ec4bf63/75ecc46828ec377dd5692c677168ef6d64fd7123 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (310305) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1279). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
