Microsoft Windows 2000/XP memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP (Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4; XP SP2; Server 2003 Gold, SP1, and SP2; and Vista allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted Enhanced Metafile (EMF) image format file.

The bug was discovered 04/03/2007. The weakness was presented 04/04/2007 by Shaun Colley with NGS Software as MS07-017 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1212 since 03/02/2007. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24911 (MS07-017: Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925902)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90389 (Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-017)).

Applying the patch MS07-017 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5254.
