Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.74/6.18.15/6.19.5. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function mmput of the component procfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: procfs: fix possible double mmput() in do_procmap_query() When user provides incorrectly sized buffer for build ID for PROCMAP_QUERY we return with -ENAMETOOLONG error. After recent changes this condition happens later, after we unlocked mmap_lock/per-VMA lock and did mmput(), so original goto out is now wrong and will double-mmput() mm_struct. Fix by jumping further to clean up only vm_file and name_buf.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-43178 since 05/01/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/02/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 318589 (Oracle Linux 10 / 9 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2026-50293)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.75, 6.18.16 or 6.19.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
