CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in freeRADIUS 1.1.5. The impacted element is an unknown function. This manipulation causes memory leak. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2007-2028. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in freeRADIUS 1.1.5 (Network Authentication Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Memory leak in freeRADIUS 1.1.5 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of EAP-TTLS tunnel connections using malformed Diameter format attributes, which causes the authentication request to be rejected but does not reclaim VALUE_PAIR data structures.

The bug was discovered 04/10/2007. The weakness was published 04/13/2007 with Coverity (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-2028 since 04/13/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67489 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : freeradius (ELSA-2007-0338)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117559 (CentOS Security Update for FreeRADIUS (CESA-2007:0338)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33643), Tenable (67489), SecurityFocus (BID 23466†), OSVDB (34912†) and Secunia (SA24849†).
