ClamAV up to 0.90.2 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ClamAV up to 0.90.2. This impacts an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2007-1997. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ClamAV up to 0.90.2 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer signedness error in the (1) cab_unstore and (2) cab_extract functions in libclamav/cab.c in Clam AntiVirus (ClamAV) before 0.90.2 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted CHM file that contains a negative integer, which passes a signed comparison and leads to a stack-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was disclosed 04/16/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1997 since 04/12/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25098 (Debian DSA-1281-1 : clamav - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165080 (OpenSUSE Security Update for ClamAV (SUSE-SA:2007:026)).

Upgrading to version 0.90.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5398.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33637), Tenable (25098), SecurityFocus (BID 23473†), Secunia (SA24891†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017921†). The entries VDB-3014 and VDB-36482 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
