Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in APOP protocol up to 1.x. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The APOP protocol allows remote attackers to guess the first 3 characters of a password via man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks that use crafted message IDs and MD5 collisions. NOTE: this design-level issue potentially affects all products that use APOP, including (1) Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5.0.12 and 2.x before 2.0.0.4, (2) Evolution, (3) mutt, (4) fetchmail before 6.3.8, (5) SeaMonkey 1.0.x before 1.0.9 and 1.1.x before 1.1.2, (6) Balsa 2.3.16 and earlier, (7) Mailfilter before 0.8.2, and possibly other products.
The bug was discovered 04/02/2007. The weakness was shared 04/16/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1558 since 03/20/2007. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67504 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : fetchmail (ELSA-2007-0385)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156165 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2007-0401)).
