Linux Kernel 2.4.34.2 copy_from_user stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.4.34.2 and classified as problematic. This affects the function copy_from_user. This manipulation causes stack-based overflow. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1353. There is no exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.4.34.2 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function copy_from_user. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The setsockopt function in the L2CAP and HCI Bluetooth support in the Linux kernel before 2.4.34.3 allows context-dependent attackers to read kernel memory and obtain sensitive information via unspecified vectors involving the copy_from_user function accessing an uninitialized stack buffer.

The bug was discovered 04/23/2007. The weakness was shared 04/24/2007 by Ilja van Sprundel (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1353 since 03/08/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28071 (Ubuntu 7.04 : linux-source-2.6.20 vulnerabilities (USN-470-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156102 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0376)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33896), Tenable (28071), SecurityFocus (BID 23594†), OSVDB (34739†) and Secunia (SA24976†). The entries VDB-36765, VDB-36631 and VDB-37242 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
