Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IncrediMail IMMenuShellExt ActiveX control (the affected version is unknown). This issue affects the function dowebmenuaction in the library imshext.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Stack-based buffer overflow in the DoWebMenuAction function in the IncrediMail IMMenuShellExt ActiveX control (ImShExt.dll) allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was published 04/26/2007 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1683 since 03/26/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Umesh Wanve and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at d2sec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118036 (IncrediMail IMMenuShellExt ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5901.
