Details
A vulnerability was found in opensourcepos Open Source Point of Sale up to 3.4.2. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function login of the file app/Models/Employee.php of the component Employee Login. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak hash vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-328. The product uses an algorithm that produces a digest (output value) that does not meet security expectations for a hash function that allows an adversary to reasonably determine the original input (preimage attack), find another input that can produce the same hash (2nd preimage attack), or find multiple inputs that evaluate to the same hash (birthday attack). Impacted is confidentiality.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-8803. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vendor explains: "[T]he code is still there to allow the upgrade path to work. The default password is initially seeded with the old hash function, but then migrated to a newer one after login. [T]he hash version check might be cleaned up in the future. Currently it's not actively in use as any password change will use a newer hash function." By approaching the search of inurl:app/Models/Employee.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
