A vulnerability was found in VMware Workstation 5.5.3 (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The virtual machine process (VMX) in VMware Workstation before 5.5.4 does not properly read state information when moving from the ACPI sleep state to the run state, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service (virtual machine reboot) via unknown vectors.
The bug was discovered 04/27/2007. The weakness was presented 05/01/2007 by Tavis Ormandy with Google (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1337 since 03/07/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
