A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.4.4 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. Heap-based buffer overflow in clipping region (aka crgn) atom handling in quicktime.qts in Apple QuickTime before 7.4.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted movie.
The bug was discovered 04/02/2008. The weakness was shared 04/03/2008 by Sanbin Lindberg with ZDI as HT1241 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1017 since 02/26/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading to version 7.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5931.
