A vulnerability has been found in Apple QuickTime 7.4.4 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. Apple QuickTime before 7.4.5 does not properly handle movie media tracks, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted movie that triggers memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 04/02/2008. The weakness was presented 04/03/2008 by Ruben Santamarta with Apple as HT1241 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1016 since 02/26/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading to version 7.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5931.
