Microsoft Excel 2000/2002/2003/2004 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 2000/2002/2003/2004 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2003 Viewer, and 2004 for Mac allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted AutoFilter filter record in an Excel BIFF8 format XLS file, which triggers memory corruption.

The bug was discovered 02/08/2007. The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2007 by Greg MacManus (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1214 since 03/02/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 89 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25173 (MS07-023 / MS07-024 / MS07-025: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Allow Remote Code Execution (934233 / 934232 / 934873) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5332.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33915), Tenable (25173), SecurityFocus (BID 23780†), OSVDB (34395†) and Secunia (SA25150†). The entries VDB-2939, VDB-3063, VDB-3065 and VDB-3064 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
