Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 (Groupware Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The Exchange Collaboration Data Objects (EXCDO) functionality in Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 SP3, 2003 SP1 and SP2, and 2007 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via an Internet Calendar (iCal) file containing multiple X-MICROSOFT-CDO-MODPROPS (MODPROPS) properties in which the second MODPROPS is longer than the first, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference and an unhandled exception.

The bug was discovered 05/08/2007. The weakness was presented 05/08/2007 by Alexander Sotirov with Determina Security Research (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0039 since 01/03/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25165 (MS07-026: Vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange Could Allow Remote Code Execution (931832)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90395 (Microsoft Exchange Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-026)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11222. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5334.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33888), Tenable (25165), SecurityFocus (BID 23808†), OSVDB (34390†) and Secunia (SA25183†).
