Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003/2007 MIME Email memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003/2007 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component MIME Handler. The manipulation as part of a Email leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 SP3, 2003 SP1 and SP2, and 2007 does not properly decode certain MIME encoded e-mails, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted base64-encoded MIME e-mail message.

The weakness was shared 05/08/2007 by Charles Truscott (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0213 since 01/12/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/12/2025).

A public exploit has been developed by Charles Truscott in Python and been published 14 years after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25165 (MS07-026: Vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange Could Allow Remote Code Execution (931832)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90395 (Microsoft Exchange Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-026)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6136.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33889), Exploit-DB (47076), Tenable (25165), SecurityFocus (BID 23809†) and OSVDB (34391†). The entries VDB-36628, VDB-36627, VDB-36626 and VDB-36625 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
