A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 (Groupware Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Outlook Web Access. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Outlook Web Access (OWA) in Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 SP3, and 2003 SP1 and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary scripts, spoof content, or obtain sensitive information via certain UTF-encoded, script-based e-mail attachments, involving an "incorrectly handled UTF character set label".
The bug was discovered 05/08/2007. The weakness was published 05/08/2007 by Martijn Brinkers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0220 since 01/12/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25165 (MS07-026: Vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange Could Allow Remote Code Execution (931832)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90395 (Microsoft Exchange Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-026)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
