The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was published 05/08/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0945 since 02/14/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2238 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25166 (MS07-027: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (931768)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100046 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS07-027)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16011. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5238.
