A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 (Web Browser). Affected is the function ctablecol::onpropertychange. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. Unspecified vulnerability in the CTableCol::OnPropertyChange method in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 on Windows 2000 SP4; 6 SP1 on Windows 2000 SP4; and 6 on Windows XP SP2, or Windows Server 2003 SP1 or SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by calling deleteCell on a named table row in a named table column, then accessing the column, which causes Internet Explorer to access previously deleted objects, aka the "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 10/06/2006. The weakness was shared 05/08/2007 with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0944 since 02/14/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2738 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25166 (MS07-027: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (931768)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100046 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS07-027)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11257. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5236.
