A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004. This issue affects some unknown processing in the library capicom.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Unspecified vulnerability in the Cryptographic API Component Object Model Certificates ActiveX control (CAPICOM.dll) in Microsoft CAPICOM and BizTalk Server 2004 SP1 and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, aka the "CAPICOM.Certificates Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 05/08/2007 by Chris Ries with VigilantMinds (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0940 since 02/14/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/13/2025).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25167 (MS07-028: Vulnerability in CAPICOM Could Allow Remote Code Execution (931906)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115550 (Microsoft CAPICOM Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS07-028)).
