Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Elastic Kibana up to 8.19.15/9.3.4. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Uncontrolled Resource Consumption (CWE-400) in Kibana can lead to denial of service via Excessive Allocation (CAPEC-130). An authenticated low-privileged user can cause Kibana to consume exponentially increasing amounts of memory by submitting a specially crafted Timelion visualization expression containing deeply chained function calls. The resulting data structure grows without bound, exhausting available memory and causing the Kibana service to crash and become unavailable to all users.
The advisory is shared for download at discuss.elastic.co. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-42399 since 04/27/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
