Details
A vulnerability was found in Samba (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in the NDR parsing in smbd in Samba 3.0.0 through 3.0.25rc3 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted MS-RPC requests involving (1) DFSEnum (netdfs_io_dfs_EnumInfo_d), (2) RFNPCNEX (smb_io_notify_option_type_data), (3) LsarAddPrivilegesToAccount (lsa_io_privilege_set), (4) NetSetFileSecurity (sec_io_acl), or (5) LsarLookupSids/LsarLookupSids2 (lsa_io_trans_names).
The bug was discovered 05/15/2007. The weakness was disclosed 07/11/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2446 since 05/02/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/17/2025).
It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67499 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : samba (ELSA-2007-0354)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185034 (HP-UX Running CIFS Server (Samba) Remote Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability (HPSBUX02218)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11442. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5315.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34316), Exploit-DB (9950), Tenable (67499), SecurityFocus (BID 24198†) and OSVDB (34699†). The entries VDB-36773, VDB-36771, VDB-85432 and VDB-85433 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
