Details
A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 3.0.0 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function samrchangepassword of the file smb.conf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The MS-RPC functionality in smbd in Samba 3.0.0 through 3.0.25rc3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters involving the (1) SamrChangePassword function, when the "username map script" smb.conf option is enabled, and allows remote authenticated users to execute commands via shell metacharacters involving other MS-RPC functions in the (2) remote printer and (3) file share management.
The bug was discovered 05/13/2007. The weakness was presented 05/14/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2447 since 05/02/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82580 (Samba 3.0.0 'SamrChangePassword' RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185034 (HP-UX Running CIFS Server (Samba) Remote Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability (HPSBUX02218)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9976.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34307), Exploit-DB (16320), Tenable (82580), SecurityFocus (BID 23972†) and OSVDB (34700†).
