Apple Safari 3/3.1 PCRE pcre_compile.cpp memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Safari 3/3.1 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file JavaScriptCore/pcre/pcre_compile.cpp of the component PCRE. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the PCRE regular expression compiler (JavaScriptCore/pcre/pcre_compile.cpp) in Apple WebKit, as used in safari before 3.1.1, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a regular expression with large, nested repetition counts, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was shared 04/17/2008 by Charlie Miller, Jake Honoroff and Mark Daniel (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-1026 since 02/26/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31992 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 3.1.1), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115785 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (SA-2008-04-16)).

Upgrading to version 3.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6031.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41859), Tenable (31992), SecurityFocus (BID 28815†), OSVDB (43980†) and Secunia (SA29846†). Further details are available at channelregister.co.uk. The entries VDB-3683, VDB-37376 and VDB-42036 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
