The BMP image parser in Sun Java Development Kit (JDK) before 1.5.0_11-b03 and 1.6.x before 1.6.0_01-b06, and Sun Java Runtime Environment in JDK and JRE 6, JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 10 and earlier, SDK and JRE 1.4.2_14 and earlier, and SDK and JRE 1.3.1_19 and earlier, when running on Unix/Linux systems, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (JVM hang) via untrusted applets or applications that open arbitrary local files via a crafted BMP file, such as /dev/tty.

The weakness was released 05/21/2007 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2789 since 05/21/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25382 (GLSA-200705-23 : Sun JDK/JRE: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118435 (Oracle Java Runtime Environment Image Parsing Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (1000647.1)).
