Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apache Tomcat JK Web Server Connector up to 1.2.22 (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown function of the component mod_jk. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
mod_jk in Apache Tomcat JK Web Server Connector 1.2.x before 1.2.23 decodes request URLs within the Apache HTTP Server before passing the URL to Tomcat, which allows remote attackers to access protected pages via a crafted prefix JkMount, possibly involving double-encoded .. (dot dot) sequences and directory traversal, a related issue to CVE-2007-0450.
The bug was discovered 05/18/2007. The weakness was released 05/24/2007 by Kazu Nambo (DiGiT) with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at tomcat.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1860 since 04/04/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25427 (FreeBSD : mod_jk -- information disclosure (d9405748-1342-11dc-a35c-001485ab073e)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165709 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2008:005)).
Upgrading to version 1.2.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34496), Tenable (25427), SecurityFocus (BID 25159†), OSVDB (34877†) and Secunia (SA25383†).
