Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 Print Table of Links cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 (Web Browser). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component Print Table of Links. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-zone scripting vulnerability in the Print Table of Links feature in Internet Explorer 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0b allows user-assisted remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML in the Local Machine Zone via an HTML document with a link containing JavaScript sequences, which are evaluated by a resource script when a user prints this document.

The weakness was published 05/14/2008 by Aviv Raff (Website). The advisory is shared at aviv.raffon.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-2281 since 05/18/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Aviv Raff and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100057 (Microsoft Internet Explorer 'Print Table of Links' Cross Zone Script Injection Vulnerability - Zero Day).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aviv.raffon.net. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6151.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42416), Exploit-DB (5619), SecurityFocus (BID 29217†), OSVDB (45074†) and Secunia (SA30141†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
