Details
A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Event Listener. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox 1.5.x before 1.5.0.12 and 2.x before 2.0.0.4, and SeaMonkey 1.0.9 and 1.1.2, allows remote attackers to bypass the same-origin policy and conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) and other attacks by using the addEventListener method to add an event listener for a site, which is executed in the context of that site.
The bug was discovered 05/30/2007. The weakness was disclosed 05/30/2007 by Nicolas Derouet (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-2870 since 05/29/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36608 (CentOS 4 / 5 : devhelp / firefox / yelp (CESA-2007:0400)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156166 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for SeaMonkey (ELSA-2007-0402)).
