Linux Kernel up to 2.6.22.21 mmap access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel. Affected by this issue is the function mmap. The manipulation results in access control. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2148. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). Affected is the function mmap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The utimensat system call (sys_utimensat) in Linux kernel 2.6.22 and other versions before 2.6.25.3 does not check file permissions when certain UTIME_NOW and UTIME_OMIT combinations are used, which allows local users to modify file times of arbitrary files, possibly leading to a denial of service.

The bug was discovered 05/09/2008. The weakness was presented 05/15/2008 by Michael Kerrisk with Kernel.org (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-2148 since 05/12/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 309 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36653 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2008:167)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165028 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2008:030)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42342), Tenable (36653), SecurityFocus (BID 29134†), OSVDB (45186†) and Secunia (SA30241†). See VDB-3706 and VDB-3707 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
