A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation of the argument location.href with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Race condition in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1; 6 and 7 for Windows XP SP2 and SP3; 6 and 7 for Server 2003 SP2; 7 for Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2; and 7 for Server 2008 SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or perform other actions upon a page transition, with the permissions of the old page and the content of the new page, as demonstrated by setInterval functions that set location.href within a try/catch expression, aka the "bait & switch vulnerability" or "Race Condition Cross-Domain Information Disclosure Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was presented 06/06/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3091. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2267 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39341 (MS09-019: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (969897)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100073 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS09-019)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8216.
