Details
A vulnerability has been found in gophish up to 0.12.1 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function ApplyTemplate of the file models/attachment.go. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Gophish through 0.12.1 contains a denial of service vulnerability that allows authenticated users with the User role to exhaust server memory by uploading a crafted Office document as an email template attachment. The ApplyTemplate() function in models/attachment.go processes Office documents as ZIP archives and calls ioutil.ReadAll() on each contained file entry without enforcing size restrictions on uncompressed content, allowing a zip bomb payload to expand to several gigabytes in memory and cause the process to be terminated by the operating system.
The weakness was published by Ashik Mohamed. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-39904 since 04/07/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy.
