A vulnerability was found in Rapid7 InsightConnect Compression Plugin up to 2.0.2 on Linux. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function create_archive of the component Filename Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Path Traversal vulnerability in the create_archive function of Rapid7 InsightConnect Compression Plugin on Linux allows authenticated attackers to write to unintended file paths via crafted filename input. The impact is limited to file corruption as content cannot be controlled by the attacker.
The weakness was presented by Jacob Steadman and Jed Starr. The advisory is shared for download at extensions.rapid7.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-8662 since 05/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation.
