Details
A vulnerability was found in Mastodon up to 4.5.9. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Loopback Interface Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server based on ActivityPub. Prior to 4.5.10, 4.4.17, and 4.3.23, the list of disallowed IP address ranges was lacking an IP address range that can be used to reach local IP addresses. An attacker can use an IP address in the affected range to make Mastodon perform HTTP requests against loopback interfaces, potentially allowing access to otherwise private resources and services. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.5.10, 4.4.17, and 4.3.23.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-46348 since 05/13/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
