A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader (Document Reader Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Javascript Methods Handler. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Unspecified vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 7.0.9 and earlier, and 8.0 through 8.1.2, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors, related to an "input validation issue in a JavaScript method."

The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2641 since 06/09/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33572 (SuSE 10 Security Update : Acrobat Reader (ZYPP Patch Number 5466)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115847 (Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB08-15)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6150.
