Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNOME GLib up to 2.86.4/2.88.0. This affects the function g_regex_replace. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer over-read vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-126. The product reads from a buffer using buffer access mechanisms such as indexes or pointers that reference memory locations after the targeted buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A flaw was found in GLib. A buffer over-read can occur in the g_regex_replace function when used with the `G_REGEX_RAW` compile flag and case-change replacement escapes because the string_append function processes matched substrings using UTF-8 functions that assume valid UTF-8 input, even when the string is treated as raw bytes. This vulnerability can cause a minor information disclosure of 1-5 bytes and a denial of service when the buffer over-read crosses a page boundary.
The advisory is shared at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-58012 since 06/26/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 2.86.5 or 2.88.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-40314). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
