Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.5.0a5 (Domain Name Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component Access Control List. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The default access control lists (ACL) in ISC BIND 9.4.0, 9.4.1, and 9.5.0a1 through 9.5.0a5 do not set the allow-recursion and allow-query-cache ACLs, which allows remote attackers to make recursive queries and query the cache.
The bug was discovered 07/24/2007. The weakness was presented 07/24/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-2925 since 05/30/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25919 (GLSA-200708-13 : BIND: Weak random number generation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15034 (DNS Server Processes Unauthoritative Recursive Queries).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35571), Tenable (25919), SecurityFocus (BID 25076†), OSVDB (36236†) and Secunia (SA26227†).
