ISC BIND up to 9.5.0a5 Random Number Generator

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in ISC BIND up to 9.5.0a5 (Domain Name Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Random Number Generator. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

ISC BIND 9 through 9.5.0a5 uses a weak random number generator during generation of DNS query ids when answering resolver questions or sending NOTIFY messages to slave name servers, which makes it easier for remote attackers to guess the next query id and perform DNS cache poisoning.

The bug was discovered 07/24/2007. The weakness was shared 07/24/2007 by Ilja van Sprundel (Sean) with RISE Security (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2926 since 05/30/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67554 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : bind (ELSA-2007-0740)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15053 (ISC BIND Remote Cache Poisoning Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35575), Exploit-DB (4266), Tenable (67554), SecurityFocus (BID 26444†) and OSVDB (36235†).
