A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file sendmail.jsp of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation of the argument mailfrom with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SendMailServlet in the examples web application (examples/jsp/mail/sendmail.jsp) in Apache Tomcat 4.0.0 through 4.0.6 and 4.1.0 through 4.1.36 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the From field and possibly other fields, related to generation of error messages.
The weakness was disclosed 07/21/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3383 since 06/25/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:sendmail.jsp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25995 (Apache Tomcat SendMailServlet sendmail.jsp 'mailfrom' Parameter XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115848 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.4 and Security Update 2008-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-06-30)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
